Sultan-Battery
It is a biggest town of Wayanad district of Kerala earlier known as Ganapativatom. The name is derived after the invasion of Tipu Sultan in this region. He used the Jain temple as a Battery and so called Sulatn Battery. The amazing and ancient town is located at an altitude of 1000 meters from the sea level which is beautifully guarded by Rocky Mountains and hill patches. Apart from attractive tourist destination, it is a hub of major commercial activities. Jain temple, Mariamman temple and Ganapathy temples are the other attractions of Sultan Battery.
Places to visit
Pookot Lake
Pookot lake is awe-inspiringly surrounded by beautiful forests and best enjoyed by tourists in the form of boating. It is an excellent place for picnickers to spend memorable vacation. The nearby children park and aquarium are other places of amusement. One can buy worthy handcrafts and spices in an emporium close to the lake.
Soochipara Falls
It is also known as sentinel rock waterfalls, located near Meppadi. It is a treasure given by nature which is cascading from 100 to 300 feet of height is a grand treat to tourists. The pool near to waterfall is crystal clear and offers exciting opportunities for water rafting and bathing. It is an excellent place for swimmers in a shining shallow water of the spring. One can enjoy the awe-inspiring distinct view of Western Ghats by the tree top huts.
Chembra Peak
It is the tallest peak in Wayanad provides an excellent offer for trekking. It is gigantically located around 2100 meters above the sea level and best choice for camping and mountain climbing. There are many temporary camps are arranged at the peak for the climbers and trekkers. The breath takingly beautiful panoramic view from the peak is worth the sweat of trekkers and climbers. Mountain lake at the top is making another impressive note on Chembra peak.
Edakkal Caves
It is located 25 km from Kalpetta and 3 km from Ambalavayal. The fissure was created by rock split as a result of natural weathering and a crevice measuring 96 feet in length and 22 feet in width. The combination of crevice and fissure s 30 feet in depth and provides a gorgeous cave appearance. One can enjoy the trekking and rock carvings of animals and humans which depicts the pre-historic era.
Kuruva Island
The tributaries of River Kabani have formed this fabulous island sprawling 950 acres of rich green forest. The proud expanse of greenery, evergreen forests and serene silence made this astonishing picnic spot. This isolated island is a beautiful array of birds, orchids, mountains and monarchs. Boat journey is another rejoicing experience in Kuruva dweep.
Other Places
Meenmutty waterfalls, Neelimala view points, Banasura Sagar dam and Begue wildlife sanctuary are the other major tourists attractions in and around Sultan Battery.
How to reach Sultan Battery
By Air
Karipur International Airport located in Kozhikode is nearest airport about 100 km from Wayanad. From Wayanad Sultan Battery is easily reached.
By Train
Kozhikode railway station is located 110 km from Sultan Battery is nearest railhead.
By Bus
Various state owned buses and private run buses are available to reach Wayanad and well connecting to neighbor districts of Kerala. From Wayanad there are many local buses, taxies and autos are available to reach Sultan Battery.
Weather
In summer 20- 36°C and in Winter 16-30 °C. October to May is best to visit Sultan Battery.
