Kozhikode District, previously known as Calicut, is one of the 14 districts of Kerala, on the Southwest of India.  Kozhikode city, also known as Calicut, is the district headquarters.  It has 38.25% of urbanisation. Kozhikode district is bounded to the North by Kannur, to the East by Wayanad, to the South by Malappuram and lastly, to the West by Arabian Sea.  It has three taluks; viz, Vadakara, Koyilandy, and Kozhikode.  Kozhikode is the headquarters of the Kozhikode district on the Malabar Coast.  Kozhikode is also the third biggest city in Kerala next to Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi and with a metropolitan census as second largest urban in Kerala.

Kozhikode History

Calicut is the anglicised form of Kalikut and also known as Cock Fort.  This place has main tourist attraction, with its appealing physical features and prosperity.  Kozhikode has political story of treacherous and ill conceived conspiracies hatched by the Western powers.  Vasco De Gama first landed at Kipped in May 1498, as the leaders of a trade mission from Portugal and he was received by the Zamora himself.

Kozhikode is the administrative unit since January 1957.  When states of india were reorganized on the linguistic basis in November, 1956, the erstwhile Malabar district was separated from Madras state and merged state of Kerala.  Malabar district is known to be too unwieldy for administrative purposes and later government prepared the formation of three districts with certain changes in the limitations of some of the taluks.  Kozhikode district was created in 1957, previously consisting of five taluks, namely, Vadakara, Koyilandy, Kozhikode, Ernad and Tirur.  With the creation of Malapuram district in June 1969 & Wayandu in November 1980, Kozhikode district now has one revenue division, three taluks, 12 blocks, 78 panchayats, and 117 villages.

Kozhikode Climate

From December to March, there is no rain and from October onwards, the temperature increases to maximum in May, which is the hottest month annually.  The highest maximum temperature recorded at Kozhikode was 39.4 0 C in March 1975 and lowest temperature was 14 0 C recorded in December 1975.
