Nilgiris is one of the beautiful districts in Tamil Nadu. It was otherwise called as Blue Mountain which was translated into Tamil as Nilgiris. The state spreads across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala states. It is also a part of Western Ghats. Doddabetta is the highest peak, 2633 meters in height. Headquarters is in Ottaman, famously known as Ooty. It is a number one Comprehensive Economic Environment Index in Tamil Nadu as per Institute for Financial Management and Research in August 2009. In 2011, it is ranked second least populated districts and first being Perambalur.
Nilgiris History
It was discovered by Mr.Whish and Kindersley, assistants of Coimbatore collector, in 1818 near Rangaswamy peak. The Coimbatore Collector, John Sullivan was very much impressed and he reported the place to the Board of Revenue in 1819. He established his residencehere. It was once served as a special attraction for the Europeans.The name of the district was first mentioned in Silapathikaram, one of the famous ancient books in Tamil Nadu. In 1789, it was ceded into British and was a part of Coimbatore. In 1868, it was got separated from Coimbatore. It was made as individual district in 1882 and separate collector was appointed. Richard Wellesley Barlow was the first Collector of Nilgiris.
Nilgiris Climate
The district is located at an altitude of 900 to 2636 meters. Salubrious climate can be experienced throughout the year. The temperature is ranges from 21 degree Celsius to 25 C in summer and 10C to 12C in winter.
