Malappuram district is one of the 14 districts of Kerala, with headquarters at Malappuram, it was created in June 1969. A classic center for Vedic learning and politics, Thirunavaya, home turf for traditional Ayurveda medicine, Kottakkal and the oldest center for education of Islam, Ponnani are located in Malappuram district along with economically thriving towns like Manjeri, Perinthalmanna, Chemmad, Edappal, and Kottakkal.
Malappuram district consists of vast wildlife and many small hills, forests, little rivers and streams flowing through the West, backwaters and paddy, arecanut, cashew nut, pepper, ginger, pulses, coconut, banana, tapioca, and rubber plantations. Malappuram is Muslim majority districts or Union Territories in south India other being Lakshadweep. The Hindu temples and Moplah mosques of the area are famous for their colorful festivals. It is the most populated district in Kerala. The populations mix includes Muslims, Hindus, Christians, other religion believers like, Buddhists, Sikhs, Jains and others. Currently, Malappuram district has 2 revenue divisions, 6 taluks, 135 villages, 14 blocks, 5 muncipalities and 100 panchayats.
Malappuram History
It is located on the Calicut to Chennai road, 12 km, Southwest of Manjeri, and 52 km, Southwest of Calicut. Previously, Malappuram was the headquarters of the British and European troops and then later it became the headquarters for Malabar Special Police.
Malapuram has the ruins of an historically fort built by Tippu Sultan. Malappuram was also the scene of the Malabar rebellion of 1921, which was suppressed by the Malabar Special Police before 1947, the area covered by the present district, a part of it from Kozhikode, Ernad, Valluvanad and Ponnani taluks of the erstwhile Madras Presidency, large scale changes in the territorial jurisdiction took place in 1957 and 1969. In January 1957, Tirur taluk was newly created by taking pieces of Ernad and Ponnani taluks. Also another portion of Ponnani taluk was reassigned to newly formed Chavakkad taluk, while the remaining piece was known as Ponnani taluk. Perinthalmanna was a new taluk created out of the erstwhile Valluvanad taluk. Ernad and Tirur continued under Kozhikode district and Perinthalmanna as well as Ponnani under the Palakkad district. The new district of Malappuram was created with four taluks, Ernad, Perinthalmanna, Tirur, and Ponnani, 4 statutory towns, 14 developmental blocks, and 95 panchayats.
Malappuram Culture
Malappuram district has a good customs in the field of art and culture. Many famous writers and poets hail from this part of the land. Thunchath Ezhuthachan, honored as the father of modern Malayalam literature was born in Trikkandiyur near Tirur, close to 400 years ago.
