Kapilavastu was the birthplace of Gautam Buddha. The city has an abundant collection of washed away stupas and monasteries. This place is considered to have religious importance for the followers of Buddha. Not only does this place hold religious significance, but is also an ideal site for trekkers. During the winter season, the land is ornamented with various crops, irrigation channels, ponds, streams, etc. giving it a completely different aura.

Places to see:

Tilaurkot Fort: It is believed to be the prime area of the kingdom of Sudhodhana. Apparently, Gautam Buddha, whose name was Siddhartha before he went out in search for his answers, spent his life till the age of 29. He was married to a woman named Yashodhara and had a son named Rahula. Siddhartha was unsatisfied by the mysteries of the world and hence went out in search for his answers.

Tilaurakot Museum: This is an old museum and has a satisfactory collection of housing jewelery, ornaments, coins, grey ware etc, some of which dating back to as long as 7th century BC.

Gotihawa: This place is believed to be the birthplace of Krakuchanda Buddha. Excavations that were carried out resulted in many stupas and monasteries. Evidently, this place was also visited by Akbar.

Araurakot: This is the birthplace of Kanakmuni Buddha. It contains an ancient moat with along with other ruins.

Kundan: This is a protected area which again contains the remains of many stupas and monasteries. It is believed to be the place where Lord Buddha preached after his was enlightened. Also, his father became a Buddhist in this very place.

Niglihawa: This place is believed to be visited by Akbar which is evident by a broken pillar. Like the other excavation sites, this place also has remains of stupas, monasteries besides other things.

Sagarhawa: Besides the usual stupas, excavations at this location brought out some rare antique items like caskets etc.

How to reach:

By air: The nearest airport is Bhairahawa via Kathmandu.

By rail: It takes about 30 hours to complete the journey and it is well connected by trains.

By road: It takes about the same time by bus and again it is well connected.
