Balrampur is one of the districts in Uttar Pradesh. Balrampur Town is the district headquarters and is situated on the bank of the River Rapti. The district is a part of the Devipatan division. A Shakti Peeth, called Pateshwari Devi temple is situated here at Balrampur. It is famous for the same. Surya Kund, said to have been made by Karn in honour of his father- the Sun, is situated on the left side of temple. It is also a famous pilgrimage site for Buddhists and Jains because of the remains of the ancient city Sravasti. Balrampur is also a municipal board in the same district. The majority population comes under the minority section according to the census 2001.
Balrampur History
For the administration of this area, a commissionary was set up by the British. Gonda was made its headquarters. Sakaura Colonelganj became the military command. Initially, Gonda district consisted of 3 tehsils Gonda Sadar, Tarabganj and Utraula. Balrampur was an estate in the Utraula tehsil. Balrampur estate was merged with Utraula tehsil post independence. On July 1, 1953, Uttraulla was divided into two tehsils namely Balrampur and Utraula. Gonda Sadar tehsil gave birth to 3 new tehsils in the year 1985 and they were named as Tulsipur, Mankapur and Colonelganj. . Later, in 1997 Gonda district was bifurcated into two parts and a new district, Balrampur was born consisting of three tehsils of the northern part of the erstwhile Gonda district, Balarampur, Utraula, and Tulsipur.
