Siddharth Nagar History
Siddharth Nagar formed part of the Basti district until December 29, 1988 when it came to be recognized as a separate district. It consists of the Northern part of Basti. The revolutionaries of the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 took shelter in the Tarai areas of Gonda, Behraich, Balrampur, Siddharth Nagar and Utraula. While the leaders got asylum in Kathmandu, Nepal, lesser fortunate souls like sepoys, jageerdars, rajas and their families took shelter in dense forests of Devi Patan, located near Nepal border. Landlords like Raja of Balrampur, Bansi etc had supported the British while other landlords like Raja of Bundi, Raja of Gonda & Rani of Tulsipur and others had taken the side of revolutionaries under the leadership of Begum Hazrat Mahal.
The zamindars varied from small to medium who were patriotic and were ready to do anything for their country. The Thakurs of Athdama ,Balrampur, Pathardayya and Bhanwapur prohibited the Muslims to migrate to Pakistan. Freedom fighters such as Adeel Abbasi and Maulana Abdul Qayyum Rahmani belong to this land. An eminent leader was affected by the massacre that he gave up politics and settled in his native village of Dudwania to spend his remaining life. A school was started by Rahmani which is now known as 'Gandhi Adarsh Intermediate School'.
