Shravasti is situated near the West Rapti River. Gautam Buddha is said to have spent 24 Chaturmases here. Ancient stupas, majestic viharas and temples are still present depicting Buddhas association with the place. It is said the town was founded by an ancient King named Sravast of the Vedic Bharat period. The capital of the Kingdom of Kosala was Shravasti during the 6th century BC to 6th century AD. The region prospered as a trading centre as well as a religious place. Sobhanath temple is believed to be the birthplace of the Tirthankara Sambhavanath in Jainism, making Shravasti an important center for Jains. The name of the city was Mahid according to the 'Bruhatkalpa' and various Kalpas of the 14th century. There are subsequent mentions showing that the name of this city was Sahet-Mahet. There also used to be a Fort in this city with many idols Devkulikas. During excavation in 'Sahet-Mahet' near Shravasti City, many ancient idols and inscriptions were found which are now kept in the museums at Mathura and Lucknow.
