KOVALAM
Kovalam beach which is known as the paradise of the south is situated at a distance of 16 Kilometers from Trivandrum. This place has developed considerably from the past three decades. Kovalam beach is a paradise for anyone who loves places where the land meets the sea. Its white sand and clean surrounding is an attractive feature of the beach. The meaning of Kovalam is a grove of coconut trees. No wonder a lot of coconut plants can be seen around. Kovalam has an excellent weather throughout the year which makes swimming a pleasant experience for all water lovers. The best period of the year to visit Kovalam is May to September. Kovalam’s adventure sport is taking the speed boat ride into the sea.
PLACES TO VISIT
Ponmudi
Ponmudi is situated 61 Kms from Kovalam. It is a place blessed with mountains and landscapes. Tea plantation is prevalent here. It can be reached by car or rented taxi from Kovalam at a reasonable rate.
Varkala
It is situated 55 Kms from Kovalam(2 hrs by road). On the way to Varkala, Anantapadmanabhaswami temple is situated, Kandiar palace and Napiar museum are famous tourist spots. Varkala is also a beach resort. Its water is said to have medicinal properties. There is also an 800 year old hanuman temple. It can be visited by easy approach by car from Kovalam.
Backwaters
Most of the hotels in Kovalam rent house boats, country boats to the tourists on cheap rates. The beauty of Kovalam and its splendor can be best pictured in a backwater cruise.
Samudra Beach
To the north most is another beach called Samudra beach. A few fishing vessels can be seen here and there in t beach.
Hawa Beach
The Hawa beach and the Kovalam beach are separated from each other by the Edakallu foreland. The sunset can be viewed entirely from this headline.
Light house beach
To the extreme south of Kovalam, there is a light house beach. Tourists are not allowed to go inside the light house. Around the light houses are memorials of Ayyanappilla Asan and Ayyippilla Asan which are visited by tourists. You get almost all kinds of sea food here. A number of transport means are available to reach this place.

Nearest airport to Kovalam is the Trivandrum international airport 15 Km away from Kovalam. Taxi fare from airport to Kovalam is Rs.300.
Kovalam is connected from Trivandrum and other junctions in the district by buses also. Tourists luxury buses are also there from Trivandrum.
City buses from Trivandrumn charge less than Rs.10 from Trivandrum to Kovalam.

September to March is the best time to visit Kovalam.
