|
Thiruvananthapuram district is one of the 14 districts of Kerala state. It was brought to existence in 1957. The headquarters is in the city of Thiruvananthapuram and also state capital. It has four taluks, Thiruvananthapuram, Chirayinkeezhu, Neyyattinkara, Nedumangadu. The urban bodies in the district are the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, Varkala, Neyyattinkara, Attingal and Nedumangad municipalities. It is situated on the West coast of India near the extreme South of the mainland. Mahatma Gandhi referred it as "Evergreen city of India" the city is mainly characterized by its undulating terrain of low coastal hills with busy commercial alleys.
Thiruvananthapuram History
After independence, Travancore joined the Indian union. One of the first famous ministries headed by Pattom Thanu Pillai was installed in office in March 1948. Thiruvananthapuram became the capital of Thiru-Kochi in 1949, the state formed by the incorporation of Travancore with its northern neighbor Kochi. The king of Travancore, Chitra Thirunal Bala Rama Varma became the Rajpramukh of the Travancore-Cochin Union from July 1949 until October 1956. When the state of Kerala was created in November 1956, Thiruvananthapuram became the capital of the new state.
With establishment of Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station in 1962, Thiruvananthapuram was the India's ambitious space programme. In 1963, the first Indian space rocket was developed and launched from the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre situated in the outskirts of the city. Many establishments of the Indian Space Research Organization were also later established in Thiruvananthapuram. A important milestone in the city's of late history was creation of Technopark, India's first IT park, in 1995. Techno Park has developed into the biggest IT Park in India and third biggest in Asia, employing close to 30,000 people from 195 companies. This makes Thiruvananthapuram on the IT map of India and is today the most promising in the country in terms of competitiveness and capability.
Thiruvananthapuram Climate
Thiruvananthapuram climiate usually tropical, it has large forest reserves positively affect the weather to induce rains. Cold weather is experienced in the mountain ranges, but in lower down, the weather is generally hot in the coastal regions. The maximum temperature is 95 F and the mean minimum temperature is 69 F. The district spreads from North to South with Arabian Sea in the West side, the relative dampness is usually high. It rises up to about 95% during the Soutwest monsoon.
From December to February being the coolest months. The average temperature gets down to 69 F during these times. It is usually considered as the winter season. Summer starts in February and until May. The average temperature goes up to 95 F in these months.
Thiruvananthapuram Culture
Thiruvananthapuram has seen cultural renaissance in the 12th century. Kerala Varma Valiakoi Thampuran, who spends a major part of his life in Thiruvananthapuram, has translated Kalidasa's Abhij na kuntalam into Malayalam, which got him the title of Kerala Kalidasa. He is also regarded as the father of modern Malayalam prose.
