Kanyakumari is the southernmost district of Tamil Nadu and the second large urbanized district ahead of Coimbatore and next to Chennai. It is the state of highest level of education and literacy. It is a famous tourist spot and the second smallest district among 32 districts. As the stands, it is located at the tip of Indian Pennisula and facing Indian Ocean. Nagercoil is about 20 km from Kanyakumari is the administrative capital. Kanyakumari is also expressed as districts of ponds and The Lands End.
Before independence, Kanyakumari was a part of Travancore and later it was added to Trivancore Cochin Presidency before the state Kerala was formed. Among eight taluks of Thiruvanthapuram, four were separated and Kanyakumari district was formed and in 1956, by recommendation of state recognition commission, it was merged with Madras Presidency. The district has a varied topology, surrounded by sea on three sides and bordered by green mountains of Western Ghats.
Kanyakumari History
The present Kanyakumari was a part of Trivancore. In the year 1835, Trivancore was divided into two divisions, Northern and Southern. Kanyakumari was southern part with in charge of Dewan Perihkar of Kottayam. In July 1949, Cochine and the united states of Trivancore was inaugurated to form Kerala district and the district was became the part of Kerala.Most of the people in Kalkulam, Agastheeswaram, Thovalai and Vilvancode taluks are speaking Tamil predominantly. In spite of agitation of people, Kanyakumari was merged with Madras Presidency by the recommendation of State recognition commission in 1956.
Kanyakumari Climate
The Argo-climate of Kanyakumari is favorable to grow number of crops. Its topography, proximity to equator and climatic factors are contributing for the growth of crops. The second crop season paddy of Thovalai and Agasteeswarm is grown as the first crop season paddy in Vilvancode and Kalkulam districts which shows the district climatic variation within the district. It gets rainfall n both southwest and northeast monsoons. The monsoon lasts from October to December.
