BHARUCH
Bharuch is a sprawling ancient city in the Indian state of Gujarat. This heroic city boasts of having a 2000 year old history and is made pious by the holy waters of River Narmada. The city flourished beautifully under the rule of the Solanki Rajputs and is accredited as one of the ancient sea ports which benefited the traders and travellers in about 1st century AD. Due to the existence of Bhrigu Maharshi temple here, Bharuch was earlier addressed as 'Bhrigukachba'.
The Dutch and the English influence is very much evident in the form of colonial buildings, worship centres and palatial structures, as many businessmen from these places came down to Bharuch to establish their industries in about 17th century.
Bharuch is also a home for many top class industries. Long staple cotton factories and textile mills almost dominate many streets of the city.
Bharuch fort is the symbol of pride for the Solanki dynasty which mesmerises the tourists with its lofty pinnacle. It offers spectacular views of the flowing Narmada. Some of the British offices and buildings were enclosed in the fort. The city with many Hindu and Jain temples is an important religious place. It is worth to pay a visit to the historic Bhrigu Maharshi temple. Dashashwamedh Ghat also merits a visit.
Navarathi is the main celebrated festival. The city hosts the colourful kite-flying festival in the month of January. During your visit make sure that you don’t miss to eat and pack the ‘Roasted salty peanuts’ which has gained international recognition.
PLACES TO SEE
Bharuch Fort : Bharuch fort is the symbol of pride for the Solanki dynasty which mesmerises the tourists with its lofty pinnacle. Located on a hill, it offers spectacular views of the flowing Narmada. Some of the British offices and buildings were enclosed in the fort. Siddharaj Jaysingh is the builder of this prime facade. Exquisite designs and wooden carvings are the foremost attractions.
Bhrigu Rishi Temple : The city got its name coined form this temple. This temple is located by the side of River Narmada and is dedicated to the ancient sage Bhrigu Rishi. Visitors from many parts of India and also from different parts of the world come in large numbers every year.
Dashashwamedh Ghat : This is an ancient religious site which has great devotional aspect associated with it. Lord Vishnu is believed to have embodimented himself as the dwarf god Vamana and asked Bali Maharaj to give him 3 steps of land. This place is put up on the holy banks of Narmada and many people visit here during the full moon days.
Swayambhu Shivlingas : Bharuch occupies a top place for Hindu temples. The place is popular for 9 naturally formed Shiv lingas called Kamnath, Jwalnath, Somnath, Bhimnath, Gangnath, Bhootnath, Pingalnath, Siddhnath and Kashi Vishwanath.
HOW TO REACH
By Air : The city of Vadodara (71 kms) has the nearest airport.
By Rail : Bharuch having its own railway station connects to all major cities in the Central and Western India. Surat (68 kms) and Vadodara station(70 kms) are the other major stations.
By Bus : The city is an important transport hub. Many buses connect many cities and towns in Gujarat. Many buses are also available from Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh etc.
