A district in the state of Gujarat India with Surat city as the administrative headquarters district, Surat shares is boundaries with Bharuch, Narmada, Navsari and Dang districts. It is surrounded by Gulf of Cambay in the west. The second-most advanced district in Gujarat and the second most populous district as of 2011, it was divided into two by forming Tapi district under the Surat district re-organization act 2007 on 2 October 2007.
Also known as Suryapur, Surat is the commercial capital city of Gujarat. Being India's eighth most populous city and ninth populous urban agglomeration, it is one of the fastest growing cities in India. It is the third cleanest city in India. According to a global study of fastest developing cities, conducted by The City Mayors Foundation, an international think tank on urban affairs, Surat ranks fourth in the list of fastest developing cities in the world. Economically, it is the fastest growing Indian city.
Located 306 km south of state capital Gandhinagar, Surat city is situated on the left bank of the Tapti River, with its centre being around 22 km from its mouth. The older parts of the city is divided by moats, with its narrow streets and handsome houses, and the newer suburbs. Textile and Diamond businesses are very popular in the city. In addition to be known as the diamond capital of the world, nowadays it is also known as the textile capital/Manchester textile city of India, which was formerly used exclusively for Ahmedabad. With the highest number of embroidery machines than any other city, it is also known as the "Embroidery capital of India".
Surat History
Violent Hindu-Muslim riots took place in Surat in 1992, which was the first and one of the worst in the modern history of Surat. The city was flooded by blocked drains owing to heavy rainfall in the year 1994. Dead street animals and public waste were not disposed in time and the city had to face the epidemic of plague, causing a number of countries to impose travel and trade sanctions. S. R. Rao, the municipal commissioner during that time, and the people of Surat worked hard in the late 1990s to clean the city.
It is home to the royal descendants of the amejee family which settled in Gujarat, known to have lineage to the mogul emperors. The family governed the manikpur district and was known as the Bhana family later.
Surat Climate
It has a moderate tropical savanna climate due to the presence of the Arabian Sea. The summer begins in early March and lasts till June with April and May as the hottest months. The average maximum temperature is 40 C during the summers. Rainy season/monsoon starts in late June with the city receiving an average of 1,000 millimeters of rain by the end of September. The average maximum temperature is 32 C during those months. Retrieval of monsoon occurs in the months of October and November with a return of high temperatures till late November. With an average temperature of around 23 C, winter starts in December and ends in late February.
Surat Tourism
The old fort builds by Muhammad- Bin- Tughlaq, the Unai hot spring, the beautiful beaches of Ubharat and Tilhat, the villages of Bardoli and Dandi where Gandhiji started Satyagraha movement and Dandi march respectively are some of the places of tourist interest in Surat. The Vansada National Park, famous for the wild boars, leopards, tigers, panther, is also situated in Surat.
