Srirangapatna
The beautiful island is belongs to district of Mandya. The River Kaveri is surrounding the entire town and gives an appearance of island. This egg shaped region is formed by the two sub divisions of River Kaveri. Some legends claim that this island was visited by Lord Buddha and he stayed in one of the islands near Srirangapatna. The name of this town is coined from the famous Ranganathaswamy temple which is the dominating feature of Srirangapatna. It is one of the important Vaishnava centers in India and was built during 9th century by Ganga dynasty. One of the sub divisions of River Kaveri is called Paschima Vaahini which is considered much sanctified where death rituals are taking place. Srirangapatna fort was built in 1537 in Indo-Islamic architecture with Persian inscription.
Places to visit
Srirangapatnam Fort
It is one of the popular monuments in India, also called as Tipu’s palace. It was constructed in Indo-Islamic architecture in 1537. The four entrance, double wall defense system, Lal Mahal, two dungeons, a mosque and Sriranganathaswamy temple are the must visit places in this fort.
Gumbaz
It is a royal burial chamber. One can find burial chambers of Tipu Sultan, his father Hyder Ali and his mother Fathima Begum. There are other various tombs of royal entities nearby. The interior decoration and magnificent ebony doors, lined pillars and a mosque are the highlighting features of Gumbaz.
Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary
It is about 5 km from Srirangapatna spreads over 57 acres. The small island is made into bird sanctuary where one can find egrets, white ibis, little cormorants, herons, etc. It is an important breeding and nesting place of birds.
Sriranganathaswamy Temple
This temple is the dominating feature of Srirangapatna. This is an abode of Lord Sriranganathar. The Lakhadweepotsava is the highlighting feature where one lakh lamps are lit especially in Sakranthi.
Other Places
Nimishambha temple, Dodda Ghosai temple, Sangam, Balmuri Falls, Jama Masjid, Dariya Daulat Baug and Captain Bailey’s Dungeon are other famous spots in Srirangapatna.

The temperature in summer is 22C to 40C and in winter 10C to 32C. It is best viewed between September to March.
