Darasuram is a small town located in the district of Thanjavur in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is located at 3 km from the town of Kumbakonam. It is known for the Airavatesvara Temple built by Rajaraja Chola II between 1146-63.The sanctuary is well-known for its wonderful architecture and the stunning stone carvings on the walls. The monument represents different stories of Lord Shiva. Darasuram is an ancient town and is about 380 km from the state capital Chennai. The town was initially called Rajarajapuram and afterwards got the name Darasuram.

Airavata Shiva Shrine:
Airavata Shiva Shrine is the Dravidian technique of structural design and is named after Airavata, a white elephant. It is frequently supposed that he was a passionate devotee of Lord Shiva. The temple is famous for various sculptures and paintings. Mythology says, Lord Airavateswara cured Yama, who had been cursed by a Rishi. He told Yama to take a bathe in the sacred tank, Yamateertham, to get rid of the curse.

Kumbakonam
Kumbakonam is a temple town, located around 5 km from Darasuram in the Thanjavur District.. The famous temple town, is known for its carved idols, fine brassware. Different temples like the Kumbeswarar and Sarangapani are counted among the famous temples of this region.

Tanjore:
Tanjore is 35 Kms from Darasuram, it has the very famous Brihadeeshwara temple built by King Raja Cholan.Tanjore paintings are famous for this area.
