Swamimala
The sacred town is located in Tanjore district of Tamilnadu, near to Kumbakonam. It is one of the sixt holy abodes of Lord Murugan. Papanasam, Thiruvidaimaruthur and Mayiladuthurai.The beautiful town is situated on the banks of River Cauvery and surrounded by famous pilgrimages like Tanjore, The major attraction is Swaminathaswami temple which is dedicated to Lord Murugan. It is renowned Hindu pilgrimage to worship Lord Murugan. There are many mythological stories associated with this place. This is place where once can find the schools teaching the art of making bronze idols. Thiruvalanchuzhi is another prominent temple attracts several devotees to Swamimalai.
Places to visit
Swaminathaswami Temple
The sacred shrine and fourth of six holy abode of Lord Murugan where he won Demons to establish peace. It is an ancient temple constructed on a artificial hillock. There are three astounding Gopurams and courtyard called ‘Praharam’. The gopurams are adorned with enormous sculptures and statues. One has to climb 60 steps to reach the temple. Several festivals especially Kanda Shasti, Thaipoosam and Visakam are celebrated in a grand manner.
Vellai Pillayar Temple
This temple is located in Thiruvalanchuzhi village around 2 km from Swammalai. The main deity is Lord Ganesha. There are several other idols of deities can be found here, mainly Goddess Kali, Periyanayaki and Lord Sadaimudinathar.
