Ariyalur is an important district in Tamil Nadu where the district headquarters are located. Finally Ariyalur was reborn as separate district on November 23, 2007. The borders are defined as Cuddalore in the north and north-east, Tiruchirapalli in south-west, Tanjavur in south and south-east and Perambalur in west. Grand inauguration function held in Ariyalur ITI playground and Ariyalur was inaugurated as 31st district of Tamil Nadu by the former Rural development and Local Administration Minister, MK Stalin.
Ariyalur is famous for the sacred Kaliyaperumal shrine located around 5 km from heart of the town. Kankaikonda Cholapuram is another popular town, renowned for the temple built by the King Rajendra Cholan. He is the father of ultimate Chola King Raja Raja Cholan who built the world famous Tanjavur big temple. Besides temples, Ariyalur is a huge reserve of lignite and one of the least populous districts of Tamil Nadu, ranked third after Perambalur and Nilgiris.
Ariyalur History
In 1741, Tiruchirapalli was invaded by Marathas and Nawab Chanda Sahed was captivated and in 1748 he secured the freedom from Marathas and became the part of the famous war to get hold of Nawabs place in Carnatic against the Arcot Nawab Anwardeen and his son Mohamed Ali. The power struggle in the history of Ariyalur was contributed by Hyder Ali and Tippu Sultan who fought against British Raj. In 1801, the Carnatic Civil and military administration was taken over by British followed by death of Tippu Sultan and thus the Thrichirapalli was formed as district in the same year. Later Perambalur and Karnur distrcts were carved out of Tirichirapalli in 1995 and the present form of Ariyalur district was came into effect from 2007.
