Latur is a district in the state of Maharshtra. The district headquarters are situated at Latur City. The district is situated on the Maharashtra Karnataka boundary. Bidar district of Karnataka lies on the eastern side of Latur district. Nanded is on the northeast, Parbhani on the northern side, Beed on the Northwest and Osmanabad on the western and southern side. The whole Latur district lies on the Balaghat plateau. It is 540 to 638 meters above sea level. Even though Marathi is the prime language spoken, Telegu, Kannada, Hindi, Gujarati and Rajasthani are also used.

Latur History

The Satavahanas, the Sakas, the Chalukyas, the Yadavas of Deogiri, the Delhi Sultans, the Bahamani rulers of South India, Adilshahi, and the Mughals have ruled the place over the years. It became part of the princely state of Hyderbad in the late 19th century. The surrounding areas were merged with it and it became Latur tehsil in the Osmanabad district in 1905. It was a part of Hyderabad under the Nizam until 1948. The chief of Nizam's Razakar army Qasim Rizwi was from Latur.

When Hyderabad became part of the Indian Union after independence, Osmanabad came under the Bombay Province. It became one of the districts when Maharashtra was created in 1960. Latur was made from Osmanabad district on August 15, 1982. The city is a tourist hub, surrounded with many historical monuments including the Kharosa Caves, as well as Sri Satya Sai Baba Temple.

Latur Climate

The months from July to October are the monsoon months. The temperatures are moderate during this time and the average rainfall ranges from 600 to 800 mm. The rainfall pattern is erratic similar to the monsoons. Summers begin from early March and last up to July. They are hot and dry. Temperature ranges from 24 C to 39.6 C. The maximum can go up to 41 degrees. Winters last from November to January. Temperatures at the peak drop to single digits but usually they hover around 13.9 C to 21.8 C sometimes lowers up to 11 C. January to March is the months with moderate temperatures.
