Katihar district, with Katihar town as its administrative headquarters, is one of the thirty-seven districts of the state of Bihar in India. Situated in the plains of North Eastern part of Bihar State, it is a part of Purnia Division. It shares borders with Purnea district in the north and the west, Bhagalpur district and Sahebganj district in the south and Malda district and Uttar Dinajpur district in the east.
Bangladesh is situated around 80 km east of Katihar town and Nepal is at a distance of about 100 km from Katihar Town in north. Even the hills of Jharkhand near the southern bank of Ganga can be seen from Katihar Town on a clear day. Its immediacy to the Himalayas in the north, Jharkhand plateau in the south and a number of rivers, which get benefitted from good rainfall gives it a distinct climate which is more or less pleasant throughout the year.
Katihar History
Katihar was given the status of an independent district in the year 1973 after it was separated from Purnia district.
