Hooghly is one the most important districts in West Bengal. It is also spelled as Hugli or Hooghli. The district derives its name from the River Hoogly. Chinsura are the district headquarters. The district of Hooghly is divided into four sub divisions Chinsura Sadar, Chandannagar, Serampore and Arambag. Hooghly along with its headquarters is a part of the Burdwan division of the state. Legend has it that the River Hooghly derives its name from a tall reed called Hogla that grows in abundance on the marshy lowlands around the river.

Hooghly History

The British occupied the areas around Hooghly primarily for their trading activities. Later in 1690, they decided to shift their location to Calcutta due to the safety and its proximity to Bay of Bengal. Owing to the shifting of this location, Hooghly lost its prominence as Calcutta gained importance. Soon after the Battle of Buxar, this district directly came under the British rule until independence after which it was merged with West Bengal. The city of Hooghly is approximately 500 years old but the district was formed in the year 1795 and Hooghly city was made its headquarters. Chuchura became the headquarters afterwards. The southern portion of this district gave way to the district of Howrah in the year 1843. In 1872, the south west portion joined the Medinipur district.
