Budaun is a district in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The district headquarters are located at Budaun Town. The district forms part of the Bareilly division. It has an area of 5168 square kilometers. Budaun was named after Ahir prince Budh as told by the famous British historian George Smith. Budaun holds religious significance. Great Sufi Saints Auliya, Wali and Peer were born here. According to Professor Goti John in an ancient inscription which is now at the Lucknow Museum, the place was earlier known as Bedamooth. Also, the state was called Panchal. According to ancient literature, there used to be a village named Bhadaunlak near it. Muslim Historian Mr. Roz Khan Lodhi said that King Ashoka built a Buddh Vihar & Kila and he named it Buddh Mau. Budaun is 169 meters above sea level.
Budaun History
The town is situated near the left bank of the River Sot. There are ruins of an immense fort and a very handsome mosque of imposing size, crowned with a dome, and built in 1223. According the traditional history Budaun was found in 905 AD. A list of twelve Rathor Kings are said to have ruled over Budaun. Qutb-ud-din Aybak captured the town in 1196 after which the town acquired an important position in the frontier of the Delhi Empire. Shams-ud-din Iltutmish acquired the imperial throne followed by his son Rukn ud din Firuz. The throne was burnt in 1571. The seat of the governorship was transferred to Sahaspur- Bilari under the rule of Shah Jahan after 100 years. The district is minority concentrated with 34% of the population being Muslims. The town is now progressing with a very high speed.
