Kannauj is a city in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It is
situated along the River Ganga. The city has rich collection of ancient weapons
and other artifacts. In fact, the city was the capital for many rulers over
time. Many dynasties have ruled over Kannauj- Maukhari dynasty, Nanda Empire,
Rashtakutas, Pala dynasty, Pratihara dynasty, Chauhans, Solankis, etc. Even foreign travelers like, Fa Hien and
Hiuen Tsang have visited the city of Kannauj. Kannauj has a rich collection of
archaeological and cultural heritage. The place is also mentioned in both the
Indian epics- Ramayan and Mahabharata.

Archaeological
Museum: Just like the other cities of this state, Kannauj also is abundant
in its archaeological treasure. This museum preserves and exhibits clay idols.
The idols are divided into various categories depending upon their age. The
categories are namely-very ancient, Maurya Age, Shudag Age, Kushar Age, Gupta
Age, Post Gupta Age, Harsh Age, etc.
Lakh Bahosi Bird
Sanctuary: This is one of the largest bird sanctuaries of our country
covering a wide area of 80 square kilometers. It has a large lake and also the
upper canal of Ganga. The best time to visit this sanctuary is from November
and March. Forty nine different families of birds can be seen here during the
season. Apart from the birds, one can also find jackal, blue bull, mongoose,
fishing cats and monkeys.
Gauri Shankar Temple:
As the name suggests, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and His wife
goddess Parvati.
Annapurna Temple: This
is a unique temple dedicated to Goddess Annapurna, the goddess of crops.
