Bijapur city is the district headquarters of Bijapur District for state of Karnataka. Bijapur is very well known for its historical monuments of great architectural significance built under the rule of Adil Shahi dynasty. Bijapur is situated Northwest about 530 km from Bangalore and about 550 km from Mumbai but much closer, about 384 km, to Hyderabad. Bijapur was recognized around 10th-11th centuries by the Kalyani Chalukyas and at that time was known as Vijayapura. This city came under the power of Khilji Sultanate in Delhi by the late 13th century. The area was conquered by the Bahmani Sultanate of Gulbarga in 1347. By this time, the city was being referred as Vijapur or Bijapur, Karnataka.
Bijapur History
The Bahmani Sultanate split into five splinter states in 1518 also called as the Deccan sultanates and one of them was Bijapur, ruled by the kings of the Adil Shahi dynasty. Bijapur city indebts much of its vastness to Yusuf Adil Shah, also known as the founder of the independent state of Bijapur and this dyasty rule ended in 1686 and it is also when Bijapur was conquered during the power of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. In the Third Anglo-Maratha War, British defeated the Peshwa in 1818 and Bijapur conceded into the hands of the British East India Company, and was assigned to the princely state Satara. The territory of Satara in 1848, along with Bijapur, was take over to Britain's Bombay Presidency when the last ruler died without a male heir. The British engraved a new district by the name Kaladagi. The district incorporated the present-day Bijapur and Bagalkot districts. In 1885, Bijapur was made as the administrative headquarters for the district after headquarters were moved from Bagalkot. In 1947, after the Independence, the district became part of Bombay state, and was resumed as Mysore State, later part of Karnataka around 1956. The southern taluks of the district were split in 1997 to craete Bagalkot District.
