Bareilly History
Bareilly played a major role in the struggle against British during The Indian Rebellion of 1857 also known as India's First War of Independence. The British brought down discrimination based on races to which the native soldiers protested. The Mutiny broke out on May 10, 1857 in Meerut and spread out to other parts of north central India as well. It also spread up to Peshwar and Afghanistan.
The rebellion was more than just a military protest as it involved the common people as well. Places like Awadh, Bundelkhand and Rohilkhand were included. Communalism rose to its peak in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Muslims in Bareilly, Bijnor, Moradabad, and other places came under one roof and demanded for a Muslim kingdom. The main conflict occurred largely in the upper Gangetic plain and central India, with the major hostilities confined to present-day Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, northern Madhya Pradesh, and the Delhi region. Though the rebellion succeeded in creating the necessary impact on the British East India Company, it came to a halt after the downfall of Gwalior on June 20, 1858. This movement definitely marked the beginning of the freedom struggle. The Rohillas tried to assist in the Mutiny but their efforts were curbed at a very early stage. During the First War of Indian Independence in 1857, Khan Bhadur Khan issued silver coins from Bareilly as an independent ruler. These coins are a novelty as far as the numismatist is concerned.
