Thangu

The distance between Lachen and Thangu is 30 Kms. Thangu is situated at a height of 13,000 feet. One should visit the place between the months of May and June, during which, the entire valley gets ornamented with vibrant alpine flowers; however the snow cover up these beautiful carpets of flowers in the cold months between October and March. 

Some simple accommodations are available for the tourists in the small cozy breathtakingly beautiful village of Thangu. In Thangu, one can observe that the rows of trees began to fade and as one goes more upwards, the inaccessible landscape of Tibetan Plateau begins. 

The village of Thangu is located on top an altitudinous plateau. For people who adore nature and its elements, Thangu offers a perfect gateway. The magnificent hiking trails from Thangu to places like Chopta Valley and Muguthang, adds on to the attraction of the location.

Since the location of Thangu is near to the border between India and China, there is a big military base present here in Thangu. The last of the residential areas end, when one moves towards the Gurudongmar Lake. However, non-Indians are not permitted to go beyond Chopta Valley.

Some simple accommodations are available for the tourists in the small cozy breathtakingly beautiful village of Thangu. Nevertheless, one should take permit from the army prior to staying the night and this permit is hard to obtain. Also, the high altitude of the place has its effects.

                                              HOW TO REACH THANGU

By air: The closest air terminal to Sikkim is the Bagdogra Airport. From here one can get shared jeeps or buses in order to reach Thangu.

By rail: One can come by rail till New Jalpaiguri and from there one can opt for bus or private cars. The distance between Thangu and New Jalpaiguri is 147 Kms.

By road: One can drive from Lachen to Thangu. The distance between Thangu and Lachen is 27 Kms.
