Babur gathered his forces to capture Chanderi in 1527 but lost and Shamsabad to the Afghans. Kannauj became a dependency of the rebels who found themselves at the head of Muslims and Rajputs. Since Humayun was busy in north, the designs in the east were persecuted by Sher Shah Suri. As soon as Kannauj was captured, Sher Shah destroyed the old city and built a fort of burnt brick there. He also built a city and named it Sher Sur. Humayun overthrew Afghans in the year 1555 and established the Mughal rule once again. He had returned after 12 years but he died soon.
