Hassan
Hassan is an important pilgrim center and a significant heritage site in Karnataka. It holds the fame of having ISRO’s master control facility. The name of this region is coined from the Goddess Hassanamba. Chennakesava temple in Bellur is the major attraction in Hassan which attracts huge number of devotees and pilgrims to Hassan. Shravanabelagola is another prominent attraction and a major Jain pilgrimage. Maha Mastakabjisekaha is the grand festival celebrated once in 12 years in Shravanabelagola. Other prominent temples are Siddheswara temple and Venkatappa Nayaka temple. Other nearby picnic spots are Halebid and Belur. Sakaleshwara temple and Gour Dam are well known spots in and around Hassan.
Places to visit
Shettihalli Church
It is an ancient Church, believed to be 450 years old Gothic architecture. The backwater of River Hemavathy is submerges with this Church in rainy seasons. During summer, visitors can visit the ruins of this Church as water recedes.
Halebid
Halebid is a great temple town and hold significant historical value. It was once served as a glorious capital city of Hoysala Empire during 12th century. It is place to see the eye catching Hoysala temples and sacred Jain shrines.
Shantaleshwara Temple
It is located in Hoysaleshwara temple complex dedicated to Shanteleswara. It is beautifully nested on a high land made of potstones. The Shiva Lingam in sanctorum is appreciated as perfect sample of Hindu architecture. Museum with rare collection of beautiful sculptures, gold coins and shining black stones are other attractions.
Shravanabelagola
It is the most popular Jain pilgrim, located in between two hills at an attitude of 3000 feet above the sea level. It is well known for the 18 feet tall monolithic statue of Lord Gomateshwara located on the top of Indragiri hills. Mahastambabhisheka is held once in 12 years is a grand festival celebrated here.
