Villupuram is the largest district in Tamil Nadu, situated at the southern tip. Headquarters is in Villupuram. It was established in 1993, carved out of South Arcot district. It has a major railway junction. Agriculture is the chief source of income. In 1980, the literacy rate was very low and now it was improved about 75%.

Villupuram History

During 1st century, the district was ruled by Cholas. Karikala Chola is among the famous king of the time. The Chola dynasty was taken over by Simha Vishnu Pallava and the region was powered by Pallavas. The chola dynasty was regained but was lost followed by Muslim domination between 1334 and 1378. Later the region came under Vjayanagara Empire and Nayaks. In 1677, the region was taken over by Shivaji then Mughals came into force. In this period, both English and French settlement happened and the entire region was became battleground and was under British control till 1947.

Villupuram Climate

Villupuram climate is generally hot and humid. The rainy season is brought by the monsoon from October to December. In summer the temperature can raise up to 40 Celsius and in winter the temperature ranges between 30-35 deg Celsius.
