PONDICHERRY

 

 Pondicherry popularly called Pondy is an outstanding holidaying destination, with a vast expansion of pristine and sandy seashores lies at close proximities to the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. There are no undulating lofty hills as Western ghats nor it has unexplored virgin forests as in Andaman but its heavenly unparalleled ambience and background beckons the visitors.

                                                   PLACES TO SEE

Aurobindo Ashram : This is an ancient and one of the richest ashrams of India. It was constructed in the year 1926 by Aurobindo Ghose. He gave spiritual speeches and spoke about the importance of yoga. After his death the responsibility of the ashram was taken over by the Mother ‘Mirra Alfassa’. The ashram also has guest houses for lodging of the devotees. The ashram is open between 8 AM to 12 PM and again from 2 PM to 6 PM.

Varadaraja Perumal temple : This is an ancient temple of Puducherry. This temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu has intensely carved pillars and lofty pinnacle.  

Manakula Vinayagar Koil : This temple where Lord Ganesha is the main deity was constructed in about 17th century. The walls have carvings of about 50 forms of Lord on the temple walls. 

Kannika Prameshwari temple : This temple with a strange amalgamation of Dravidian and French styles is dedicated to Goddess Shakthi. 

Sacred Heart Jesus Church : It is a popular catholic church that was constructed during the French regime during the 17th century. Its long glass windows and marble floorings and decoration are stunning.  

Church of Assumption : Constructed in the later part of 18th century it houses statue of St. George and Mother Mary. 

Jamai Mosque : It is a beautiful mosque with stunning architecture. It is situated in Mulla street.

Meeran Mosque :   This marvelous structure bearing Islamic style of architecture is estimated to be constructed in about 17th century. Kallasas form the prominent attraction. It was built by Arcod Navab. The mosque is active and people gather here to pray regularly.

Mulla Mohammad Mosque : The teaching of Islam rules and principles are undertaken here. It has a small hall, pond and a clean cooking area.

Auroville Beach : This pristine beach is located about 11 kms away from the heart of Pondy and lies close to Auroville. It has shallow waters which makes it ideal for swimming. 

Paradise Beach : It is a serene beach that can be reached only by a ferry. It is not very crowded, you can laze around and spend your holiday in calmness.

Auroville : Auroville is a special city built by Mother where people from all parts of the world can stay and work in peace and harmony. This beautiful city with French and Indian style buildings was designed by French architect Roger Anger. Matri Mandir temple is the popular attraction here. 

Children’s Park : This beautiful park is located just beside the sea. The park houses the idol of Dupleix who was the Governor of this place in the 17th century. 

Bharathi Park : This beautiful park with lofty trees and plants provides great escape from the soaring mercury levels in Pondicherry. An ancient structure called Aayi Mandapam is located in the center of the park. 

Chunnambar : It is a popular beach cum backwater with all recreational services like paddling, motor boat ride etc is an awesome holidaying retreat. It has top class multi cuisine restaurants and tree top lodging facilities to experience the nature at its best. 

By Air : Chennai has the closest airport.

By Road : buses are available from cities like Chennai, Bangalore, Madurai and Tanjore.
