Uttarkashi District is a district in the state of Uttarakhand, which is located in the northern part of India. It is also recognized as the Uttar Kashi District. In the Garhwal Division of the Uttarakhand, the district is situated. Uttarkashi city is the administrative headquarters of the district. The district of Uttarkashi is placed at a high altitude in the Himalayan Range. The Ganges and the Yamuna Rivers have their starting points or origin in the district. As a result, a lot of Hindu Pilgrims visit the place. This town is situated on the main track, which leads to Gangotri. Believed to be a major Hindu Pilgrimage centre, the town of Uttarkashi plays a host to numerous Hindu temples. The state of Himachal Pradesh borders the district on the north direction and Tibet rests on the northeast, while Chamoli District surrounds it on the east, Rudraprayag District on the southeast, Tehri Garhwal Distrcit on the south and Dehradun District on the west.

At an elevation of 1352 metres from the sea level, on the banks of the river Bhagirathi, the sacred town of Uttarkashi is situated. Numerous ashrams and temples are there in Uttarkashi and so is the Nehru Instiute of Mountaineering. Uttarkashi bears a resemblance to the name as well as to the position of the city of Kashi. The facts that the town of Uttarkashi is positioned on the banks of the Ganges, rests adjacent to Varun Parvat, which is a hill located on the union of Varuna and Asi Rivers, contains a ghat, whose name is Manikarnika Ghat and in the middle of the town a temple of Shiva is situated all these facts mirror the likeness to Varanasi.
Uttar Kashi History
From the region that comprised of the parganas of Rawain and Uttarkashi of Rawain Tehsil of former Tehri Garhwal district, Uttarkashi District was constructed on 24th February 1960. Occupying a total area of about 8016 sq kilometers, the district stretches over the farthest north-west corner of the state of Uttarakhand. In is located in the midst of the rough terrain of the spiritual Himalayas. The district is surrounded on the north by Himachal Pradesh State and on the east by the district of Chamoli and Tibet. From the district headquarters of Uttarakashi, the district derived its own name. Also known as Kashi of the north, the town is given the same amount of respect and adoration as given to Kashi of the plains. It is an old place with intense and precious cultural traditions and customs. The banks of the Ganga River house both the Kashis; the Kashi of the plain as well as the Kashi of the north. Situated inbetween the rivers Syalam Gad and Kaligad, Uttarkashi is believed to be a holy place. The river Syalam Gad is also known by the name of Varuna and the river Kaligad is also recognized as the Asi. The Kashi of the plains is also positioned in the midst of rivers the Varuna and the Asi. Varanasi contains a Ghat of the same name, as one of the most sacred Ghats in Uttarkashi, named Manikarnika. Temples devoted to Vishwanath can also be found in both the Kashis.
Uttar Kashi Culture
Barahat is the name by which Uttarkashi was known in the old days. The term Hat meant capital in the old days; however it means market. A particular king made this place his place; it is believed so. The region formed a part of the culture of the Pandavas, according to Kedarkhand. However similar social values, portraying diversity in cultural heritage are observed by the greater part of the population.
