It shares borders with Rajsamand District on the north, Chittaurgarh District on the east, Banswara district on the southeast And Dungarpur district on the south. It shares boundaries with the state of Gujarat on the southwest. It is bounded by the Aravalli Range on the northwest, across which the districts of Sirohi and Pali lie. It comes under the Mewar region of Rajasthan.
The city, which is also the administrative headquarters of the district is popularly known as the City of Lakes. It is located at a distance of 403 kilometers from the state capital of Jaipur in the south east, 248 kilometers west of Kota, and 250 kilometers northeast of Ahmedabad. In the period Rajputana rule, Udaipur was the capital of the erstwhile kingdom of Mewar. Most popular for the Rajput-era palaces, Udaipur is also known for its history, culture, and scenic locations. The Lake Palace is built on the entire island in the Pichola Lake. Many of the palaces have now been turned into luxury ad royal hotels. Also known as the "Venice of the East", it carries the nickname of the "Lake City". Some of the most beautiful lakes of the state such as Lake Pichola, Fateh Sagar Lake, Udai Sagar and Swaroop Sagar are located in Udaipur.
Udaipur History
Founded by Maharana Udai Singh II in the year 1559, Udaipur was the final capital of the former Mewar kingdom. It was located southwest of Nagda, on the banks Banas River, which was the first capital of the Mewar kingdom. It is said that Maharana Udai Singh was blessed by a hermit on the foothills of Aravalli Range when he arrived there for hunting. He directed him to build a palace on that spot, assuring him that it would be well protected. Udai Singh II then built a palace, as directed, on the spot and made it his residence. When the Mughal emperor Akbar conquered the fort of Chittor in the year 1568, Udai Singh moved the capital to the spot of the palace, which consequently came to be known as the city of Udaipur.
With the weakening of the Mughal Empire, the Sisodia ranas, and later maharanas, who were fiercely opposed to the dominance of the Mughals, reestablished their independence by recapturing most of Mewar except Chittor. Udaipur remained the capital of Mewar. It was a princely state of British India in 1818. Due to its geographic location comprising of mountainous region, it was very difficult for the Mughal invaders with their heavily armed horses to establish themselves in Udaipur as rulers, and hence remained safe from their influence.Being a mountainous region and unsuitable for heavily armoured Mughal horses, Udaipur remained safe from Mughal influence in spite of much pressure. The Udaipur rajvansh is one of the oldest running dynasties of the world with even the king of Nepal and Jammu tracing their origins from it.
