Tonk District is a district of the state of Rajasthan in western India with its administrative headquarters as Tonk city. The district is bordered with Jaipur district on the north , Sawai Madhopur district on the east , Kota district on the southeast, Bundi district on the south, by Bhilwara district on the southwest and by Ajmer district on the west. Tonk was also the capital city of the princely state of British India from 1817 to 1947.

Tonk History

The first founder ruler of Tonk was Nawab Mohammed Amir Khan During the rule of Nawabs the entire native were invited in an Islamic function of Miladdunabi without any distinction in caste, color and greed. It was organized by them for the period of seven days in the month of Rabiul Awwal, collectively with all zeal in Tonk.
 
It was known as SAMWAD LAKSHYA in Mahabharat period. Tonk was further merged in to Malvas during the regime of Mouryas. Most its part was under Harsh Vardhan during the rule of Mouryas. , It was under Bairath State as per HEVAN TSANG, a tourist from China. During the administration of Rajputs, the parts of this state were under Chavras, Solankis, Kachvahs, Sisodiyas and Chouhans. Later, it was conquered by King Holkar and Sindhia. In 1806, Amir Khan conquered it from Balvant Rao Holkar. Lare on, British government gained it from Amir Khan . As per the treaty of 1817, British government returned this dynasty to Amir Khan.
