Sirohi District, with the town of Sirohi as its administrative headquarters, is a district of Rajasthan state in western India. It is the third least populous district of Rajasthan as per the census of 2011, after Jaisalmer and Pratapgarh. Mount Abu was known as "Arbudaanchal" in the acient times. The whole district is broken up into hills and rocky ranges. The district is divided into two portions by the granite massif of Mount Abu , running from north-east to south-west. The south and south-east part of the district is mountainous and rugged. It lies between Mount Abu and the main spine of the Aravallis and is drained by the West Banas River. Abu Road, a station on the main Delhi-Ahmedabad rail line, lies in the valley of the West Banas. Dry deciduous forests are very common in this part of the district, and the higher elevations of Mount Abu are covered with conifer forests. Abu Road is the biggest city being the main financial hub of Sirohi District. The district has the least number of villages in Rajasthan.
The western and northern parts of the district which lies in the rain shadow of Mount Abu is relatively drier as the southwest monsoon is blocked. Sukri River flows through the southwest corner of the district. It is an irregular stream that drains the western slope of Mount Abu. The tributaries of the Luni River flow through the northwestern portion of the district. The western and northern portion of the district is covered by thorn scrub forests.
Sirohi History
Sirohi was acceded to the state of Bombay in 1948. In 1950, it was given to Rajasthan. During its accession with Rajasthan, an area of 787 square km consisting of Abu Road tehsil and a part of Delwara tehsil was merged with the then Bombay state, but was later returned to Sirohi district of Rajasthan State on November 1, 1956. Also known as "Dev Nagari" since ancient times due to the presence of various temples and shrines in the district, it is also famous for the manufacturing of double edged swords, since the time of the Chouhan Deora rulers until 1947.
