The state of Bihar in India comprises of thirty-eight districts, out of which Saharsa District is one. The administrative headquarters of the district is located in the town of Saharsa. A portion of the Kosi Division was constituted by Saharsa District. On 1st April 1954, the status of a full district was given to it. With passing of time, many other districts were constructed by taking out portions of land from the district, thus making Saharsa relatively smaller. Particularly Madhepura occupied large portion of area, when it was created in the year of 1981.
41 metres is the standard altitude of the place. The Kosi River Basin contains this district in it, thus giving the district its plain lands of alluvial soil, which is the reason for the very fertile nature of the land. Nevertheless, much erosion of soil has been occurring owing to the shifting nature of the river Kosis course. One the Gangess biggest tributary is river Kosi. The linkage between Saharsa District and other regions is not superior, because the bridges have an inclination to get swept away due to the occurrence of floods. Major amount of deaths and destruction of properties are caused due to occurrence of devastating floods, which takes place more or less every year. In Mahishi, located in Saharsa, Mandan Mishra and Sankracharya carried out an exchange of words, which became quite famous. Poor economic conditions of the residents, joblessness and lack of education are the principal dilemmas prevailing in the Saharsa District. These problems have become more amplified due to the flood of the river Kosi in the year of 2008.
Saharsa History
A former section of the districts of Bhagalpur and Munger, Saharsa was given the status of a separate district in 1954. On 2nd October, 1972, the headquarters of the Kosi Division was established in Saharsa District. The districts of Saharsa, Purnia and Katihar were the components of the Kosi Division. On 1st December, 1972, construction of Bipur, which is a new Civil Sub-Division, took place. Former portions of the Supaul sub-division of this same district, Raghopur, Chhatapur, Basantpur and Nirmali and others, summing up to a total of 24 development block constituted this Sud-Division of Birpur. On 30th April, 1981 and 1991, Saharsa District was again broken up and thus Madhepura and Supaul Districts came into being. Saharsa Sadar and Simri Bakhtiarpur are the present day sub-divisions of Saharsa District. 10 development blocks and ten anchals constitute this district.
On 1st April, 1954, the district of Saharsa came into being. Earlier it used to be a part of the districts of Munger and Bhagalpur, not a separate district. The presence of a dense mesh of rivers, which have their origins in the Himalayas, causes major yearly floods used to occur in the region covered by the district. In 1917s Annie Besant and in 1921s Satyagarah Movement started by Gandhiji, a significant role was performed by Saharsa District. Mass encouragement and assistance was obtained by these movements here.
