Pudhukottai is also known as Pudhugai, is one of the districts in Tamil Nadu. Pudukottai city is the headquarters. The boundaries are Tanjavur on northeast, Palk Strait on southeast, Ramanathapuram on southwest and Thiruchirapalli on northwest. The district is separated from Thanjavur and Thiruchirapalli district in the year of 1974.

Pudukkottai History

The preform of Pudhukottai was found by Raghunatha Thondaiman. After his death, Setupati became the ruler of Pudhukottai.During Raghunatha Thondaiman period; he fought against Tanjavur Nayakars and supported Madurai Nayakars. After the direct clash between Thondaiman and Nayakas of Tanjavur, Raghupati conquered Thirukattupalli. The next ruler Raja Vijayaraghunatha Raya helped Arcot nawab against Mysore ruler Hyder Ali. He also defated Hyder Ali and captured Kilanilai and Aranthangi. He was also very loyal to British and helped against Tipu Sultan. Till independence, Pudhukottai was under British rule.
