Pratapgarh district, which is a part of Udaipur Division, is the 33rd district of Rajasthan, created on 26 January 2008, by carving out the former tehsils of Chittorgarh, Udaipur and Banswara districts . It is the second least populous district of Rajasthan according the census of 2011.

Pratapgarh History

Pratapgarh, an independent district from 1948 to 1942, became a part of Nimbahera district and then of Chittaurgarh, as a consequence of reconstitution of district boundaries.  It was again granted the status of a separate district by the then Vasundhara Raje Government in the year 2008.

There are a large number of historical and ancient sites in the district but are not protected by either the Archaeological Survey of India or by the Department of Archaeology and Museums, Government of Rajasthan. Some of the important yet unexplored archaeological and historical sites include Avleshwara, Ghotaavarshika, Sidheriya, Gandharvpur Jaanagarh, Veerpur and many others. Sita Mata sanctuary situated in the district has pre-historic rock engravings.

Pratapgarh Culture

The city is a mixture of old and new cultures. Tribal culture is found in the nearby villages. The tribal people come to the city every Sunday to buy essential commodities in the weekly haat market. Since its declaration as a separate district, the state government has announced various development schemes for it.
