In Tripura state, one of the districts is the district of North Tripura. It is an administrative district. Kailasahar is the administrative headquarters of the district. Dharmanagar, Kanchanpur and Kailashahar are the three sub-divisions of the district. Kumarghat, Panisagar, Pecharthal, Kadamtala, Damcherra, Dasda, Gournagar and Jampui Hill are the eight blocks, in which the district has been separated in order to carry out the development functions. Dharmanagar, Kailashahar and Kumarghat contain the three Nagar Panchayats. Tripuri, Koloi, Halam and Chakma are the principal tribes of the North Triupura District. Running alongside each other, the hill ranges of Jampui and Sakan are situtated in the district. In this District, a place called Betling Chip of Jamui Range, is situated, which is the place having the maximum elevation in the state of Tripura. The principal rivers of the district are the Deo, Manu, Longai and Juri River. At a distance of 10 kilometers from Kailasaha, which is also the district headquarters, a place called Unokuti is there. Rock carving and temples from the time period of 8th Century can be found here.
North Tripura History
In 1761, the British first captured the princely state of Tripura. The terrain of the pictographic state is hilly. Till 1871, the state did not have any political representative. Hill Tipperah, the hilly region was governed by the Maharaja without any interference. On 13th August, 1947, the state of Tripura got included into the Indian Union. On 9th September, 1949, the papers containing the merger indenture was signed. On 15th October, 1949, the official taking over of the government of the state occurred. To begin with, only one district was there in Tripura. Later, on 1st September, 1970 the District was divided into three districts. In Kailashahar, in the office of the Sub-Divisional Officer, and also somewhat in Kumarghat, the administration activities of the district of North Tripura were carried out. However, in Kailashahar, the entire office was relocated afterwards. On 13th November, 1987, the transference of the Collectorate in Gournagars recently built complex took place. On 14th April, 1995, a new district named Dhalai District came into existence, after the division of the North Tripura District was been done. Ambassa was the administrative headquarters of the newly formed district of Dhalai.
