Nanded is a district in the state of Maharashtra. The district headquarters are situated at city of Nanded. It is the second largest city of the Marathwada region. It is an important holy place for the Sikh faith and is famous for the Hazur Sahib Gurudwara. It was once famous as the district of Sanskrit poets. It has great antiquity and famous Muslim Sufi shrines. A famous temple called Renukadevi temple is present at Mahur.

Nanded forms part of the Aurangabad division. Nizamabad, Medak and Adilabad districts of Andhra Pradesh border Nanded on the east, Bidar district of Karnataka on the south, Parbhani and Latur districts of Marathwada on the west and Yavatmal District of Maharashtra's Vidarbha region on the north. The language, behavior and general conduct of the people are affected due to closeness to three different states.

Nanded History

Formerly, Nanded was the capital of Telangana. Bidar was made the headquarters of Subha and named as Ahmadabad when Aurangzeb was appointed the Subhedar of the Deccan. . The Subha of Bidar was divided into six sarkars and 76 mahals and Nanded was one of the Sarkars of that Subha. Guru Gobind Singh is the tenth spiritual leader of the Sikhs. Nanded was his permanent abode and he came here following Aurangzebs death in 1708. He proclaimed himself the last living Guru and established the Guru Granth Sahib as the eternal Guru of the Sikhs. This elevates the reverence of Granth to that of a living Guru. In his remembrance, a monument has been created where he took his last breath. Maharaja Ranjit Singh's endowment saw the construction of a beautiful Gurudwara at Nanded around 1835 AD. The Gurudwara has a dome and intricate carvings. It is known as Takhat Sachkhand Sri Hazur Abchalnagar Sahib.

Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Buddhist and Jain communities live here. People of various cultures live together happily. Recently, a function was held at Nanded on the occasion of Guru Ta Gaddi where everybody was involved and working together even they are from different religions to make it a great success and it has been proven also. Rich cultural heritage can be seen at Nanded. Saint poets like Vishnupant Sesa and Raguhunath Sesa and Vaman Pandit were born here.

Nanded Climate

Extreme climatic conditions are experienced here. April and May are summer months. Heavy rains take place from August to September. December and January are winter months. Annual temperatures range from 9 degrees to 44 degrees. October to February are the favourable months to visit. The highest maximum temperature ever recorded was 48 C in May 2009. The lowest recorded temperature was 2 C on in the year 1911. Average annual rainfall is 725 mm.
