Nagpur is a district in the state of Maharashtra. The district headquarters are situated at the city of Nagpur. It forms part of the Nagpur division. Bhandara district surrounds the district on the east, Chandrapur on the southwest, Wardha district on the southwest, Amravati district on the northwest and Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh state on the north.

Nagpur is a city and winter capital of the state of Maharashtra, the largest city in central India and third largest city in Maharashtra after Mumbai and Pune. . It has also recently been ranked as the second greenest city of India after Bangalore. It is a major commercial and political centre of the Vidharbha region. Oranges are grown in large numbers here and thus it is sometimes referred to as the Orange city. It is also the headquarters of the Hindu nationalist organization RSS. It is an important location for Dalit movement.

Nagpur lies precisely at the center of the country with the Zero Mile Marker indicating the geographical center of India. The Gonds found the city and later on it went to Bhonsles of the Maratha Empire. In 19th century, Nagpur was taken over by the Brtish East India Company. It was made the capital of the Central Provinces and Berar. But with the formation of Maharashtra, it lost the status of the capital. It was later made the second capital of Maharashtra according to informal Nagpur pact. Nagpur is also declared, "Tiger Capital of India" as it connects many Tiger Reserves in India to the world.

Nagpur History

The princely state of Nagpur was annexed by the British in 1853 after the death of Raghoji III. Later on, it became part of the Nagpur province. It was merged with the Central Provinces in 1861. Nagpur formed part of the Nagpur division. In 1950, Nagpur district became part of the newly formed Madhya Pradesh state and Nagpur became its capital. Nagpur district was incorporated in the state of Bombay state in 1956. On May 1, 1960, with the formation of Maharashtra state, it became part of the state.

Nagpur Climate

It has tropical wet and dry climate due to its location at the centre of Indian peninsula far from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. Dry conditions prevail almost all the year round. The months from June to September are the monsoon months with annual rainfall of 1205 mm. The highest recorded rainfall was 304 mm on July 14, 1994. Summers are extremely hot and last from March to June. May is the hottest month. Winter lasts from November to January, during which temperatures can drop below 10 C. The highest recorded temperature in the city was 48.6 C on May 26, 1954, while the lowest was 3 C.
