In the state of West Bengal lies a district named Maldah. It is separated from the capital city Kolkata by 347 km. Maldah is known for its mangoes and silk. In fact, the mangoes grown in this state, named after the name of the state itself are world famous. Gombhira, a folk culture is widely used as a medium for representing joys and sorrows of daily life as well as other affairs, national or international.

The capital of Maldah, erstwhile English Bazaar was also once the capital of West Bengal. The place has a rich cultural heritage. The place where the Mahananda meets the Kalindi is called Old Maldah and forms part of the English Bazaar urban agglomeration. Cotton and silk industries flourished in this area during the 18th century. It still produces large quantities of rice, jute and wheat and distributes the same all over the country. Jami Masjidh and Nimasari tower are the two important historical monuments. Several colleges are run which are affiliated to the University of North Bengal. The main crops in and around Maldah are rice, jute, legumes and oilseeds. Mulberry and mango plantations are done at large scale. The economy mainly depends on mango and silk exports. August 17, 1947 is considered to be the Independence Day for Maldah.

Maldah History

The district formed a part of the Rajshahi division up to 1876 and of Bhagalpur division from 1876-1905. It again came under the Rajshahi division until the partition of India. During the partition, it remained under doubt whether it should form a part of India or Pakistan. Sir Radcliffe did not make it clear at the announcement. For these few days, Maldah remained under a magistrate in the East Pakistan. On August 17, 1947, Maldah became a part of West Bengal.

Maldah Climate

Summers in this area are extremely hot and humid. Rainfall occurs throughout the year. The area experiences four different seasons. Months from March to May are the summer months. Months from June to September are monsoon with plentiful rains from the south-west monsoons. Winters generally start from the middle of November.
