Kulgam District, located at the height of 1739 meters, is a district of the state of Jammu and Kashmir of India. It is famous for the religious saint Sayed Simnan Sahib, who named the city as Kulgam. In Sanskrit, KUL means in clan and GRAM means village. It is said that he lost something in the stream. Syed Simnan originally belonged to a place called Simnan in Iran. He was attracted  by the spot on a cliff beside river Veshew while travelling through the Kashmir valley. He was buried at the same spot which had amused him. The family of Syed Simnan was buried in a village called 'Amun', situated nearby. Both the shrines have a platform of stonework wooden superstructure of excellent quality deodars. He was known for his spiritual powers and had devotees amongst both Muslims as well as Hindus.
