Verinag

Verinag is 80 kilometers away from Srinagar. The place has an altitude of 1876 meters. River Jhelum originates from the Verinag spring. An octagonal base, inside a covered passage surrounds the spring.

The place Verinag derives its name from Nila Nag. He was the son of Rishi Kashyap who was a great Hindu sage. He established the territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The shape of the spring used to be circular until the reign of Mughals. In 1620, Emperor Jahangir asked for renovation of the spring that changed its shape from circular to octagonal.

The spring waters are calm and sparkling clear. It is surrounded by tall pine trees. The mountain air gives a fresh feeling to the entire atmosphere. The place is decorated with beautifully colored flowers.

By air: The nearest airport is Badgam which is 80 kilometers away from Verinag. It is the easiest way to reach Verinag.

By rail: Jammu is the closest railhead. Verinag is about an hour away from Jammu.

By road: Roads connect various places of the state to Verinag.
