Kolkata History
From the year 1942 to 1944, a lot of chaos was created at the ports of Kolkata due to the Japanese bombs. Also, the outbreak of the famous Bengal famine left many starved to death. The famine was a result of natural, military and administrative factors. Violence that arose due to the issue of a separate Muslim state killed almost 4000. It was furthered by the partition of India when the Muslims moved towards East Pakistan and the Hindus moved to the city. The Naxalites, also called the Marxist-Maoist movement led to rampant protests and led to widespread riots causing power shortages and strikes. It also affected the economy. Kolkata was also badly affected by the refugees who took shelter in the city. The Bengal Liberation War of 1971 left them homeless. Rajiv Gandhi called Kolkata as the dying city because of it socio-political scenario. From 1977-2011, the Communist Party took control over West Bengal. Kolkata being the key base for Indian communism, the Communist Party of India became the world longest serving Government chosen by the people. Kolkata has experienced some reforms in its economy since 1990. The information technology and manufacturing sectors have revived Kolkatas economy.
