Jalna is a district in the state of Maharashtra. The district headquarters are situated at Jalna Town. It forms part of the Aurangabad division. Jalgaon district borders the district on the north, Parbhani and Buldhana districts on the east, Beed district on the south and Aurangabad district on the west.

Samarth Ramdas Swami was born at Jamb Samarth village which is very popular. A battle was fought near the village of Assaye on September 23, 1803 called the Battle of Assaye. The village is located near Jafrabad in the district. The Nizam has control over Jalna as a tehsil in Aurangabad district. On May 1, 1982, Jalna, Bhokardan, Jafrabad, Ambad tahsils of Aurangabad district and Partur tahsil of Parbhani district were combined to for the district of Jalna. It is the premier commercial centre of the Marathwada region and is also the headquarters of tahsil and district to which it gives its name.

Jalna History

The city dates back to the time of Lord Ram. Goddess Sita is believed to have lived here. The locals still point out the place where Ramas palace stood. Jalna was named after the occupation of a wealthy Muslim merchant which is called Julaha or weaver. Jalna was held as Jagir by one of the Generals under Akbar. The place was used as a home by Abul Fazl for a short period of time. Nizam-ul Mulk Asaf Jah also favored the town as being healthier than Aurangabad. Masters of the place were changed frequently. It was ruled over by Shindes dependents for a long time. But after the Battle of Udgir in 1760, it went into the hands of a rival claimant from Pune. It was taken possession of by Colonel Stevenson's Troops in 1803 in the famous Battle of Assaye, a village in Jafrabad tahsil on the river of Juah located around 10 kilometers east of Bhokardan. Later on, Nizam retained control of the place.

Jalna Climate

The district experiences a sub-tropical type of climate. Southwest monsoons bring rainfall in the area between June to September. The average annual rainfall of the district ranges between 650 to 750 mm. When the rainfall levels drop, droughts are a common phenomenon.

Followed by the monsoons, the winters last up to February. The minimum range of temperature during winters is 9-10 degrees Celsius and maximum is 30-31 degrees. Summers are hot and extend up to June. Day time temperatures during summers range from 42-43 degrees Celsius.
