During the reign of Maratha Empire Indore was an important hub of Delhi and Deccan. After the death of Madhavrao Peshwa, the Maratha Empire crumbled and Indore was declared as the capital of Holkar state, until Rani Ahilyabai Holkar affirmed Maheshwar as the new capital.
Indore History Indore derived its name from the temple of Indreshwar built in 1741. It lies on one of India's oldest pilgrimage routes from Mahakaal at Ujjain on River Kshipra and Omkareshwar on River Narmada and Rameshwaram, Indore city served as a suitable resting place for the Marathas of Deccan on their way to North India. The Maratha warriors often entered into a battle with the Mughal Empire. The foundation of this commerce centre was laid down in 1715 by the local zamindars drawn towards the lucrative trade in the summit of Khan and Saraswati Rivers.
The trade centre grew rapidly in1733-1818 under the reign of Holkar dynasty; they built a palace which is two century old as of now still stands in the main square. The British forces under Sir John Malcolm defeated the Holkarsin in 1818 the city was declared as the capital of the princely state of Indore. Rani Krishnabai Holkar signed the treaty of Mandsaur and the control of Indore shifted in the hand of the East India Company. Between the years of 1948 to 1956, Indore served as the summer capital of the former state of Madhya Bharat. At present it is the commercial capital of M.P.
