The state of Meghalaya, India, constitutes of five districts, out of which the administrative district of East Khasi Hills is one. Shillong was made the administrative headquarters of the district. According to the 2011 census, the district occupied the number one position in the list of districts of Meghalaya having the maximum number of inhabitants. The terrain of the district contains undulating landscape. The plane lands of Ri-Bhoi District borders the northern side of the district. From here, it slowly and steadily gets higher and opens up to Shillongs undulating grasslands. The rivers form valleys, which remains scatter over this grassland. After this it plunges into a steep fall into southern parts. Here in places like Mawsynram and Shella-Bholaganj where deep gorges and ravines are found. The Mawsynram and Shella-Bholaganj communities and rural development and improvement blocks are surrounded by Bangladesh. The eastern frontier of the district remains surrounded by the Jaintia Hills District. The western frontier is shared by the West Khasi Hills District.
Undulating and hilly lands, dotted with bottomless gorges and ravines dots the terrain of the southern portion of the district of East Hills, although the landscape of the district is mainly hilly. The most significant and distinct geographical characteristic of this district is the Plateau of Shillong. The rivers form valleys, which remains scatter over this plateau. After this it plunges into a steep fall into southern parts. Here in places like Mawsynram and Shella-Bholaganj where deep gorges and ravines are found. The country of Bangladesh borders this place. A picturesque glimpse of the country side is obtained from the Shillong Peak, which is set at a distance of 10 kilometers from Shillong. This place is both, the districts plus Mizorams most elevated spot.
East Khasi Hills History
On 28th October, 1976, the two divisions of East and West Khasi Hills districts were constructed after the separation of the former Khasi Hills District. So thus by taking out some portion of land from the onetime Khasi Hills district and thus the East Khasi Hills district was formed with it. East Khasi Hills District and Ri-Bhoi District are the two administrative districts, which were created by segregating the East Khasi Hills District on the 4th June, 1992.
East Khasi Hills Climate
Diverse characteristics are shown by the climate of the district. The plateau region exhibits a mild and moderate climate while the Northern and Southern portions exhibit a warmer hot and humid climate and has sub-tropical pockets. The south-west monsoon affects the climate of the entire district to a great extent during the months between May and September. For the maximum part of the year, the climate remains damp and steamy. However the time between the months of December and March witnesses a dry period as well.
