Uttar Dinajpur is a district in the state of West Bengal. It was created on April 1, 1992 after dividing the West Dinajpur district. It has 2 sub divisions - Raiganj and Islampur. On the east, it is aligned by the districts of Panchagarh, Thakurgaon and Dinajpur district of Bangladesh and on the west it is lined by Kishanganj, Purnia and Katihar of Bihar. On the north it is surrounded by Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri whereas on the south it is aligned by Malda and Dakshin Dinajpur. National Highways 31 and 34 pass through this district and it is well connected to the rest of the state by roads.
The area is completely plain except for slights slopes towards the rivers like Kulik, Nagar and Mahananda. The whole Uttar Dinajpur has a very fertile soil and the alluvium is considered to be of Pleistocene Age. The soil is suitable for growing rice, jute, mesta and sugarcane. Raiganj is the district headquarters. It also has the Raiganj Bird Sanctuary which is the 2nd largest in Asia. West Bengal is a much diversified state. The location of the state is geographically unique and it experiences a wide range of temperatures. West Bengal has natural beauty, archaeological assets, music, literature, paintings, dance, customs, languages, etc. Uttar Dinajpur just adds to its already existing treasure.
