Dakshin (south) Dinajpur is a district in the state of West Bengal. It was initially a part of the West Dinajpur but was divided on April 1, 1992. It comprises of 2 sub divisions called, Balurghat and Buniadpur. It is the least populous district of West Bengal. This district does not have any major large scale industry. In November 2003, the first medium scale industry started. Not very advanced transport and communication facilities are there. A new railway line has been set up between Eklakhi and Balurghat. The trains started on December 30, 2004. National Highway 34 passes through this district. Hindus and Muslims occupy the majority of population and Bengali is the principal language.
Dinajpur Dakshin History
At the time of partition of India, Dinajpur was split up into west and east Dinajpur. The East Dinajpur forms the part of Bangladesh. Some parts of Bihar were added to the West Dinajpur in 1956. It was later bifurcated into North and South Dinajpur on April 1, 1992.
