The district of Dhar lays in the Malwa region of west Madhya Pradesh in central India. The historic town of Dhar is an administrative headquarters of the district. It is surrounded by the districts of Ratlam to the north, Ujjain to the northeast, Indore to the east, Khargone to the southeast, Barwani to the south, and Jhabua to the west. It is part of the Indore and division of Madhya Pradesh. Pithampur is a large industrial area under the Dhar District. The town is located 908 ft above the sea level. It is situated amid beautiful lakes and trees barren hills and possesses, besides its old ramparts, many fascinating buildings of both Hindu and Muslim cultures, few of the temples have the remains of cultural and historical significance.
History of Dhar
Dhar was a proactive centre of Revolt, during the First War of Independence in 1857. Freedom fighters captured the Fort of Dhar kept it under their possession from July to October, 1857. The Bhils also took active part in the Revolt. The rebels opposed the British and shattered their authority. Colonel Durand wasted no time in attacking and capturing the town of Dhar. The local crowd fired few rounds on the British troops, the British soldiers then turned brutal in revenge from the local people. They killed the civilians dragging them from their dwellings, looted their property and humiliated their ladies. The rebels defended the fort, till 31st October, 1857 till the british troops invaded the place.
After the Revolt, the State of Dhar was captured by the British territory. The British Government however, altered the decision of Indian Government, and restored Dhar to Anand Rao III, on 1st may 1860. The city of Mandu attracts looks splendid covered in vibrant colors, stimulating stream and torrents rushing down into the surrounding canyon, it draws thousands of tourists visit Mandu, to catch a glimpse. On the banks of River Bagh lays the unearth caves on the rocks of a huge hill. Bagh has ancient paintings from 5th and the 7th centuries, symbolizing the Golden Age of Indian Art. Paintings from Ajanta and th Bagh paintings represent the finest traditions of Indian Art, it had a great influence on the the entire Buddhist Art in Asia. The majority of Dhar inhabitants belong to Scheduled Tribes. The Bhils and Bhilalas are the chief tribes. Their highest concentration is in Kukshi Tahsil.
