Buldhana History
Buldhana district formed part of the Vidarbha region along with the erstwhile Berar province. It is said that the Mauryan ruler Ashoka also ruled over the place. Later, the Satavahana dynasty took charge of the Berar province. From them, it shifted to the hands of the Vakataka dynasty, the Chalukya dynasty, the Rashtrakuta dynasty, and the Chalukyas again and finally to the dynasty of the Yadavas of Devagiri. During the early 14th century, the Sultan of Delhi, Ala-ud-din Khilji, took control over the land and a period of Muslim rule began. In the middle of the 14th century, it became part of the Bahmani Sultanate after it separated from the Delhi Sultanate. In 1572, the district formed part of the Nizam Shahi Sultanate along with the rest of Berar. The Sultanate was based at Ahmednagar. Berar was surrendered by the Nizam Shahis to the Mughal dynasty in 1595. In the 18th century, the Mughal Empire began to expand. In 1724, the Nizam of Hyderabad, Asaf Jah I, formed an independent state combining the southern provinces. The British East India Company took control over the Buldhana district with the rest of Berar in 1853. Berar was later bifurcated into East and West Berar and Buldhana district formed part of the West Berar.
